The Institute of Automatic Control of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg is part of the Department Electrical Engineering (EEI) of the Faculty of Engineering.

Research activities at the Institute of Automatic Control focus on model and control design, analysis, and embedded optimization of dynamical systems ranging from nonlinear and infinite dimensional processes to discrete event and networked systems. Another expertise of the Institute of Automatic Control lies in transferring these advanced control and optimization concepts into practice by closely cooperating with industry, for instance from the automotive domain, robotics and process automation. The Institute of Automatic Control is responsible for the education in control engineering within several bachelor and master programs of the Faculty of Engineering.

The Institute of Automatic Control was founded in 1966 with the appointment of Prof. Herbert Schlitt. After his retirement in 1997, the Institute was headed by Prof. Günter Roppenecker. In 2019, Prof. Knut Graichen was appointed to the Chair of Automatic Control.
